I dont expect Pete to remember the time he and his crew of PFCS volunteers( or
was it wrg nw)  locked two boats down the Rochdale Nine in a total of 57
minutes. We were so grateful for the help that we took them all to a pub on
Deansgate and paid for a round. In the event we did not save anytime at all!.
We were helped in this feat by the fact that all the pounds were well below
level and did not encounter the problems of too much water.Mike Askin put his
finger on the solution of water overtopping the gates, run the excess off,
particularly at Dukes lock as the bottom pound is  the longest up to the
junction with the Ashton. It is not wasting water it is the sensible solution
and takes the strain off the winches and lock gates. The Rochdale freqently has
too much water flowing down the nine. CKP
