indeed, what sanitised BBC nonsense language is this! As a native  Lancastrian 
(now in exile), I always knew them as Barm Cakes. Perhaps in the  tropical 
south 
(south of Wigan that is, or the mysterious east (of Bolton) known  now as 
Greater Manchester, and other unmentionable places beyond) this is the  name of 
the delicacy. Ashton-under-Lyne does, I suppose have to  conform to this 
imposed 
linguistic correctness since its identity has been  compromised by 
bureaucracy since it is no longer in  Lancashire.{;-))
