We passed this way in July and met a chap at Compton lock who was visually
surveying the area above the lock as his company had just agreed a contract for
'temporary soft edging' above the lock. We suggested to the gent that a metal
edge would be safer for boats here but, as he said, it's BW who decide and pay
us so we do what they want - whatever we might feel.

There is a load of recently added (last year) edging a bit further on from the
lock towards the railway bridge. We, at that time saw this being installed with
one bloke in the water in waders using a large (wooden) mallet to hammer the
stakes in while others held things in place. The pace of work was more BW than
contractor and they all seemed to be in BW costume but, seeing this waste of
manpower we felt clown gear would be better! (The chief clown being the person
who thought up this approach.)

Sorry - didn't use that bit of towpath, and there were moored boats
all along there, so couldn't see.

All the best

There are no strangers on the cut, only boaters we've yet to meet.
