On Saturday 23 August I went to view progress but, except for the Princes Dock
area, hoardings and security fencing made it impossible to view progress
between Canning and Stanley Docks. I have placed seven of the photos I took in
a Liverpool Canal Link folder in the Photos section. Fortunately a British
Waterways site has an aerial photography section showing progress as at April
2008.

As most members will know, the 127 mile Leeds & Liverpool Canal currently ends
in Liverpool just south of the flight of four locks which runs down to Stanley
Dock. The Liverpool Canal Link is a £20m project which extends the canal
through Collingwood, Salisbury, Waterloo and Princes Docks, across the Pier
Head in front of the 'Three Graces' and into the South Docks providing a
further 1½ miles of navigable waterway. The route includes two new locks, open
channels and tunnels.

British Waterways (optimistically?) say that the Pier Head section should be
finished this month with the link throughout completed by December. A period of
testing and commissioning, will follow enabling it to be open to boats in the
Spring of 2009.

When open the journey along the link should be quite a unique and exciting
experience!

Ralph
