Is discussion of the canal scenery off topic? I don't know. Anyway -

Last year we were puzzled by a new crop seen from the lower reaches
of the Nene where it was growing well. It appears to be a bamboo like
plant with a straight leafless stem ending in a large grass like
leaf. It was growing in clumps about four feet tall and several feet
across.

Now we have found the same plant growing in the Fradley area. It's
either growing less well or it is less well established.

We have blue skied three hypotheses:

1 A silage plant for animal feed - seems unlikely as it is still
growing now and it would surely have been cut by this time;
2 A biomass plant for combustion purposes - seems unlikely as there
is more leaf than stem and it seems improbable that it would supply
much fuel;
3 A material for the production of alcohol for propulsion - seems
unlikely as most research in Britain seems to be concentrating on
plant oils.

Can anyone tell us what it is?

There are no strangers on the cut, only boaters we've yet to meet.
