Hi everybody ..

I've just ordered a copy of Towpath, having seen the recent reference to it
here plus the on-line version, and I guess I'm now becoming a tad more
au-fait with the arguments re bridge-hopping, CC, etc., the subject
certainly seems to get people stirred up !!

Now I'm presuming here that canal boats have no form of 'official logbook'
at present - yet a basic, and cheap to buy, a paper logbook (with numbered
pages to prevent fraud), and to be produced to the relevant
inspectors/authorities on demand, would surely solve most of the problems
that have been described here - at least, so far anyway.

All that it need hold is the date and location of the boat (and most of the
time people will have <some> idea of where they are - even if it is only
between 'bridge A' and lock B') and have a requirement for it to be
completed when you are away from your permanent moorings. That might seem,
at least from a first read of BW's September paper, to answer many of the
questions regarding the long-term use of short-term mooring, bridge-hopping,
etc..

Thinking on, the *less* precise the entry was the harder it would be to
prove that you were *not* hogging moorings - legally or illegally.

OK - I can anticipate the cries of anger/anguish from some people at the
very *idea* of logbooks but, if they solve a recognised problem that also
causes anger/anguish, then they must have *some* merit.

Trevor
