This month's outing is a shortish (about 4 miles) circular morning walk from
West Stockwith taking in the Chesterfield Canal and Rivers Trent and Idle
including Misterton Soss (what's that then?). In the afternoon we have
arranged for knowledgeable local people to take us on a guided walk around
West Stockwith including the recently restored historic "water lanes". (another
mystery for you...)

We will meet at 10:15am (for 10:30am departure) in the car park of the
Waterfront Inn, Canal Lane, adjacent to the canal basin at West Stockwith,
where we will return for lunch - hopefully we will not overwhelm the catering,
they aren't used to large numbers at lunchtime. The beer has been
tested/tasted by our local roving (fussy) expert and declared to be the real
thing. We haven't tested the food but the menu looked fine. There is also a
chip shop and a small supermarket near the end of the walk which
should keep everyone from starvation.

West Stockwith is an interesting ribbon settlement and former port alongside
the River Trent with many old buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. The
guided tour will commence about 2pm and will last 1-1½ hours - depending on
how many questions we ask! In return for the guiding, at the end of the tour
there will be a collection for the West Stockwith Local History Society.

There is a BW loo at the basin but no shops at the start of the walk so bring
your Mars bars with you. Much of the route is on good surfaces but there is
some field walking so expect a bit of mud on the middle section.

West Stockwith is about 5 miles northwest of Gainsborough and signposted
from the A161, about one mile away.

Please book in with Dave and Izzie Turner. either by email or by phone as
soon as you like.
