Tam & Di Murrel were carrying and trading coal out of Atherstone certainly
well into the nineties. I think they were also involved in contracting as
well.

I would say Tam knows what he's talking about!

I've always felt that back splices are prone to jamming (although tapering
them can help). Personally I always used Spanish whipping, and started with
the twine sewn through the rope. Never had one slip off - even with very
slippy artificial rope.
