At the age I was then I knew nothing of such things.

I used to like going into a really quaint second-hand bookshop in 
Christmas Steps, where the proprietor (a Mr George, I believe) still 
worked out the prices in pounds, shillings and pence many years after 
decimalisation had arrived elsewhere. It was only years later that I 
learned that he had an "upstairs" department that little boys were 
certainly not invited to peruse, as it housed materials of a certain 
nature.

I think you may be mistaken in that. I always understood that it was 
culverted right under Broadmead and The Centre to St Augustine's Quay, 
where it keeps the Floating Harbour topped up.
