Won't reiterate all the stuff in this thread about pivot points.

I learnt a really good tip by watching steerers of the Zoo buses at
Paddington, who used to get the bows out without walking to the fore end
and pushing by :

1) loosing off the fore-end

2) Taking a line from a stern dolly (eye over dolly), round a bollard
or through a ring and back with a turn on the dolly

3) Putting the boat astern, holding the stern in and adjusting the
tension on the stern line while...

4) ...the bows come out and the stern turns with the guard iron on the
bank. (Really boat-proud steerers dropped a side fender down to stop this
from damaging the paint)

5) When the bows were pivoted out sufficiently, engaging neutral,
gathering in the stern line and then going ahead

This was particularly effective in adverse winds and when getting a 70 foot
boat out of a 70 foot 6 inch gap between boats.
