In  fact Percy Shaw was born in Boothtown Mansion, Halifax. I remember 
passing his  house, many times, on the Queensbury Road from Halifax to  
Bradford.

I understand the story is that when he was walking home in the dark he saw  
lights reflected in the eyes of a cat.
 
It's a sobering thought that if the cat had been walking away from him then  
he wouldn't have invented the cats eyes - but may have invented the automatic  
pencil sharpener instead.  ;-)
