A little of both, if you're not side by side already (as in a lock),
it's probably quicker to just pick up the bow rope on your way past.
The main point I was getting at was faster speed though.

I had to get Shoestring from Northolt to Uxbridge sans engine as it
was being worked on. Me and a friend pulled the boat (through ice) to
Bulls Bridge, but the next day someone was going up to Denham and
managed to catch a lift. They started by taking me alongside - they
with a 45 ft ex-shroppie hire boat, and me with a heavy 60 footer -
and it was slow going. We singled out at a "narrow" bit, and we went
along much better then - nearly making normal canal speed.
