THE INLAND WATERWAYS PROTECTION SOCIETY
LTD
DUDLEY NO. 1, FENS BRANCH AND STOURBRIDGE
CANAL
Saturday, 4th April, 2009 10.00 a.m. O.S. Map Landranger 139 SO934888
Today we will be walking on the Dudley No.1 Canal, walk down the Delph
Locks, visit the Fens Branch and walk down the Stourbridge 16 locks and the
Stourbridge Arm to the Bonded Warehouse.
We will meet at The Dudley Canal Trust's Headquarters at Blowers Green
Pumphouse, Peartree Lane, Dudley, DY2 OXP. The Pumphouse is at
Parkhead Junction, and I have arranged for cars to be parked on the Trust's
car park. I would like to get away promptly as there is a lot to see.
We will have a lunch break at the Sampson and Lion pub, which is beside Lock
5 on the Stourbridge Locks. This is a famous boxing pub. I have been unable
at this stage to ascertain whether any food will be available, so I suggest
that
you bring a packed lunch. (The phone number I have does not accept
incoming calls).
After lunch we will visit the Glass Cone and Dadford's Yard and the Dock. The
Bonded Warehouse at the end of the arm may be open.
The walk is approximately 6 miles and is downhill all the way!
We will return by bus from Stourbridge Bus Depot, service X96 and disembark
at Holly Hall Estate stop to return to the car park.
As always, stout shoes or boots and waterproofs are recommended, and
today, it is suggested that you bring sustenance. Mars bars may be available at
the little shop near to Dadfield's Yard!
Please ring me on the Friday evening, 3rd April between 6pm and 8pm to let
me know whether you will be coming. My phone number is 01384 294131. If I
am not available please leave a message on my answer phone. I look forward
to seeing you.
lan McKim Thompson.
Next time out - Llangollen and Whitchurch Arm - 7th June.
