In general, you can get most things clean with a cold or tepid wash.  I suspect 
not boating grease (or grease generally) if you are using a non-polluting 
washing powder/liquid like Ecover.

If someone in the family has a mold or dust mite sensitivity, 55 deg or hotter 
wash is required, eg of sheets.

I learned this week that if one washes only with cold water, black mold and 
stuff eventually grows in the washer, and one should do at least 1 hot wash per 
month to keep it in check.
