Can you elaborate on the signal strengths comparison between Orange and Vodafone is please, from your personal experience? Many, many years ago the coverage maps used by Orange were actual measured signals for hand-held mobiles, whereas the other services used estimated signals (possibly for car-installed units). I am not sure how (if?) this situation has changed, but it's something to look out for in the small print when looking at coverage maps.
