Thanks for the explanation though, I appreciated your time laying it out for me :-) I was a marine engineer on small craft for much of my nine+ years of army service, both wood and steel, as well as Fourth on 1000 tonners - but no 'gentleman's launches' I'm afraid, although did come across some real beauties! I'm certain that a lot of what I'm learning here (about narrowboat construction and usage, as well as their history) will be very useful when, with luck and that following wind, I buy my own come autumn - and the necessary cash of course :-) Trevor [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
