I've put up a web page about one of the locks on the River Shannon, the one at Athlone, at http://irishwaterwayshistory.com/about/irish-waterways-operations/a-river-shannon-lock-athlone/ I've attempted to show both the original nineteenth-century gear and the modern stuff, but I'm ashamed to say that I don't actually know what all of it was for.
