                   MANCHESTER BOLTON & BURY CANAL

Saturday 22nd August 2009 10.30
a.m.

We are very pleased for this walk to have Paul Hindle as our Guide. Paul is an
acknowledged expert on the affectionately known MB&B Canal and is the author of
the excellent Spiral Bound Towpath Guide for the MB&B. He will no doubt have
some
copies for sale on the day.

Paul will walk with us from Bank Top Bridge (No. 80) down the Bury Branch to
the
junction with the Bolton Branch at Nob End and then on to Ringley. Total
distance is
around 6.5 miles including a trip to The Jolly Carter at Little Lever where
there are 4
real ales and good food for lunch.

We will meet at Bank Top Bridge and then shuttle some of the cars to Ringley.

As always, stout shoes or boots should be worn and waterproofs are recommended
as at least being available. The major part of the walk is before lunch so
those who
need sustenance to keep them going will find Mars bars at local shops or
supermarkets or should bring themselves suitably supplied. There will be the
usual
coffee/tea stops.

Please ring Paul on 0161 723 1433 on the Friday evening before the walk
between 6
and 8 p.m. to advise him you are coming. The management of the Jolly Carter
will be
advised of our coming (we will tell them around 20 of us) but we will update
them on
the day with actual numbers. This worked very well on the Llangollen at
Grindley
Brook so please tell Paul if you aim to order food.

DIRECTIONS:

The easiest approach is from the M60 (Manchester Ring Road) Junction 17, and
take
the A56 for Whitefield/Bury and the A665 for Radcliffe. There are several
possible
routes but the easiest is via Spring Lane and Bury Road to Warth Fold Road. Go
across the Metrolink level crossing and then the canal. For Sat-nav use M26 2XL.

NEXT TIME OUT : WEEK-END AWAY Wilts.& Berks Canal. Details to follow soon
but for those wanting to book accommodation I am told the best area would be
Chippenham as central with Lacock to the south and Sutton Benger to the north.
