Hi all,

Our annual week on a boat is fast approaching: we're hiring a boat
from Stone on August 24th. From that starting point we're spoilt for
choice of possible routes, so I thought I'd come here for advice on
the alternatives.

We've decided against the 4 Counties Ring, because I gather to do it
in a week involves fairly long days and we'd prefer a relaxing holiday
without pressure to get anywhere. In the past we have done the
Cheshire Ring, Harecastle Tunnel and the Caldon so this year we are
planning to head south from Stone to see a different part of the
system.

The main decision seems to be where to go from Gt Haywood: left down
the Trent & Mersey or right to the Staffs & Worcs and Shroppie. What
are the "must see" bits on either of these routes? Are there any other
worthwhile routes or diversions we should be considering? We prefer
quiet, rural stretches, and are not bothered about stopping at a pub
for the night - we may eat out at lunchtime, but usually stop in a
quiet spot and eat on board in the evening.

Also, are there any spots where we are likely to have problems with a
70' boat - leaky top gates or lack of suitable winding holes at the
mid-point of the week, for example?

Thanks,
David.
