It wasn't too expensive. Valley Cruisers - or the company that shares the 
premises with them - are electric specialists; so as well as getting the 
alternator reconned in 24 hours, which any boatyard should be able to do, they 
could also give me a diagnosis of why it went wrong, and how a metre of cable 
appropriate for the load can prevent it going wrong again.
