He was, and it was linked to the original mail here,
I remember working with the convicts from Gloucester goal, on the River
Avon on the lock in Stratford, we use to trade matches for food with
them, but they only came on Saturdays, (they came on weekdays but I
wasn't there)
they having excellent food sent by the prison from there gardens. Their
first act in the morning was to light the gas, it then stayed on all day
till they left so they could light there fags. Only once did one attempt
to escape, made the mistake of taking Hutches batter landrover, he did
not get far, and when the police caught him we had to take a trailer to
get the landrover back from the station as it was un-everything, this
didn't stop Hutch using it normally, but such was life in those days.
We taught them useful skills such has how to use a oxy-propane set to
cut metal, drive digger to pick big heavy things up, and drop them in
the back of lorries, not that I'm sure they would think, that these
skills would come in handy, in later life ;-) They were good fun though,
most were in for minor crimes such as insulting a judge or none payment
of TV licences (for the last ten yrs) are two I can remember.
