I use the ASUS WL500 Premium V2 with "modified" firmware to run wi-fi
via a Vodafone USB dongle on Bream. The Access point is just inside the
front doors and it works fine on the back deck so coverage will be no
problem. I used to have the 3G dongle in a plastic box outside but
within a few months the USB link died, presumably due to temperature or
humidity so now I hang it in a window inside or put it through the front
doors inside a plastic bag if coverage is bad.

The ASUS was a great solution when I installed it 2 years ago, but did
require the confidence to hack the firmware. There are now out of the
box solutions with USB ports to plug your 3G device into. I don't recall
any of the model numbers but D-Link certainly do one that I've used in a
work situation. It was designed to be a primarily ADSL solution for
small offices with 3G fail over but does work without the ADSL
connection configured. What it couldn't do is fail over from one 3G
connection to another and I suspect that some very serious hacking would
be required to get this to happen on any router. What I do on Bream if I
lose coverage is to swap the Vodafone SIM for an Orange one, change the
access point settings on the router, reboot it, then carry on. (Note
that the Vodafone dongle was not SIM locked when I bought it.)
