Yes, I knew that, of course, which was why I did not suggest that you 
may have been in error. I just find the version with double-s looks all 
wrong.

That is probably because by the normal rules of spelling it ought to be 
incorrect, as a final consonant after a single vowel is usually only 
doubled when the stress is on the final syllable.
