Trevor

I wouldn't assume that all 57 ft Heron boats have the same capacity tank. I
remember a few
years ago when Liverpool Boats changed the radius of the stern but kept the
same
position for the bulkhead which formed the front of the tank. The result was
several boats
having fuel capacity of only approx 10 gallons :-(

Is your fuel tank built in to the stern with the uxter plate forming the
bottom and the rear deck
forming the top of the tank?
If so you can easily calculate the capacity and calibrate an accurate
dipstick:

Next time you top up the tank insert a length of dowel through the filler
and then mark on
the dowel the level of the fuel before filling (using a hacksaw or similar).
Ask the boatyard to
stop the pump at a nice round number of litres (i.e.25 or 50), dip the tank
again and mark
the dowel. Do the same for the next 25 or 50 litres (purely as a double
check).
You will then know that x litres of fuel measures y inches on the temporary
dipstick.
Then use the dipstick to measure the total height. All that is then needed
is a bit of basic
arithmetic and you can then calibrate a permanent dipstick.

I had no idea of the capacity of the tank on my boat, but I now know it is
exactly 200 litres.
I have a dipsick calibrated in 25 litre divisions - simple!!
