A couple from State College, PA USA and Penn State University have bought and outfitted a canal boat to use in a research project. The trip will be of 12 months duration and cover the canals and waterways in the Eastern USA and Canada.
They have added and electric motor to the boat to go with the original diesel engine, making it a deisel-electric hybrid. It also has been fitted with 8 solar panals. Their blog can be found at www.slowboatcruise.com Their trip started on Tuesday on the Erie Canal. I found this interesting because I live in State College. Our family has boated on the Trent-Severn in Canada, but not on a narrowboat. My narrowboat experience has been in England. You can imagine what issues they may run into.
