The Basin beyond the tunnel was an interchange with the plateways and later
railways that came from the Cauldon Low and other Quarries in the area. CKP

Interesting.

However, the tunnel, and the length beyond to the terminus, *is* part
of the Caldon (i.e. the Etruria <-> Froghall) Canal, isn't it? i.e.
*Not* part of the Uttoxeter branch, which surely wouldn't have been
built until after the tunnel was there..

In that case, it must have been an extension. It would normally be
difficult to justify the cost involved to achieve such a short
additional distance. But I guess the stone traffic was very high
volume. However, why couldn't that traffic all use the original (i.e.
upstream of the tunnel) wharf?

As to increasing use of the basin, why not rent some long-term.
moorings in it? They could be called "The Cauldon (low) Moorings".
