Anti-clockwise there's nowhere suitable to moor between Fairfield and
Piccadilly - at Piccadilly there's the Piccadilly (Ducie Street) basin (before
the locks) but before that on the left is Thomas Telford Basin in Piccadilly
Village; just ask one of the residents for the code to get you back through the
gates. Piccadilly Basin is nearer the city centre.

In this shot
http://www.webbaviation.co.uk/gallery/v/manchester/_MG_9284.jpg.html the Thomas
Telford Basin is more or less in the centre, then the canal comes into a small
triangular basin then under a building into the main Piccadilly Basin.

Castlefield:

Rochdale Canal straight line from right, then circle to left or under bridges
to basin and YMCA on right.

Others can say where, if anywhere, can be recommended for mooring the
Manchester side of Altrincham (about 3 hours from Castlefield). If you have
time, there's the diversion over Barton Aqueduct to Worsley mines (or just to
Barton).

Happy to assist down the locks in Manchester if I'm free.
