I've personally had problems with svn:externals and don't use it anywhere. Instead, all of my vendor code is managed with Piston. Here's a howto for using Piston with Rails plugins: http://www.rubyinside.com/advent2006/12-piston.html That said, a lot of people do use svn:externals with much success.
