No you're not alone. I've been experimenting with this as well and
have found it a good in-between step between using a full-on
configuration management system and just doing the thing by hand.  In
fact I'd wager capistrano is a decent in-between solution to helping
the people wearing the admin hat to work towards automating things
more in an easier fashion.
