.bash_profile is for interactive logins, .bashrc is loaded for both interactive and non-interactive logins (ie: a command-line executable would use a non-interactive shell).
Did you logout and log back in after modifying .bashrc? You can also just type "$ . ~/.bashrc " to reload it.
