If you set :copy_cache to true it does, as long as the files being ignored have not been checked into your repo somehow. The reason it works is because copy_cache causes your local repo to be cloned in a temp directory, and then the clone is copied and sent to the servers.

You can save yourself a little time on subsequent deploys with:

And you can save a little more time by not deploying your .git
directory, tests and other miscellanea:

   set :copy_exclude, %w(.git test)
