I agree 100%. But unfortunately neither of those options is good for me; the backticks are in the built-in deployment recipes (specifically deploy:rollback:cleanup and the Perforce p4client_root). And my default shell is tcsh because of an organization-wide, IT- maintained .cshrc file which I need.
I'd like to help make Capistrano work for more people "out of the box". I appreciate your help but I totally understand if you don't care to support semi-oddball setups like mine.
