Having the same problem running ruby 1.8.7 p173 with both capistrano 2.5.5 and 2.5.8. As a temporary workaround, I limited max_hosts to one connection in my deploy.rb script (default_run_options[:max_hosts] = 1). This seems to solve this problem, though it obviously is not the best solution.
