We have been using capistrano super successfully for deployment over two years now, and it suddenly started behaving oddly.
Using capistrano-2.5.8 running on a FreeBSD (7.2-RELEASE-p1) with stock ruby (ruby+nopthreads-1.8.7.160_3,1). Any recipe with more than one server in the app role just hangs. Reduce the recipe to a single server and all is fine (either of the two). Add both at the same time and try to invoke just ls on the servers (no other directives) and it will hang indefinitely (the servers don't see a request for connect). Tried downgrading capistrano (2.5.5) and switching ruby versions to pthreads, but withouth effect.
