You should check the version you have of Ruby, RubyGems and what gem sources
you have.

Then, check out the documentation on gemcutter.org.

$ which ruby
$ ruby -v
$ which gem
$ gem -v
$ gem sources

Tip: my sources look something like:

*** CURRENT SOURCES ***
>
> http://gemcutter.org
> http://gems.rubyforge.org
> http://gems.github.com/
