There are several advantages to qemu.

- it is portable so you have wider potential audience for qemu images
- it is opensource so if you identify an issue with the emulation you
can more likely get it fixed and avoid polluting your source with
workarounds for emulation bugs
- it emulates multiple network cards which was one of the issues with vmware
- it can run completely in userspace (although with decreased
performance) avoiding the issues of crashing the host system with
executing the guest system in kernel
