odd that doesn't seem to work for me either.

emacs repsonds that it is indeed enabling and disabling transient-mark-
mode when I use M-x transient-mark-mode, but I still see no
highlighting, though as I said I see it enable and disabled if I use
other marking commands, i.e. C-x C-p

thanks for your help. I can of course live with out it, I can just use
the mouse. It just seems a little odd.
