Because:

1. Like you said, one file vs. two files to maintain (for this env
information)

2. Nothing is *nix universal.  I don't run MacOSPorts on my Ubuntu box, so I
don't have /opt/local in my path there.  And just try getting your .emacs to
work cross-platform if you have paths or fonts configured in it.

You bought a mac, now you have to "think different".
