Please excuse the personal nature of this message but I feel the need to write a a bit today. Just arrived home today from vacation on the Isle of Palms , a barrier island near Charleston, SC. We had to leave the island for one day during the hurricane watch, it was a "voluntary" evacuation order but we decided to take the advice of the local EOC and head inland for a day. Amateur radio was quite useful for obtaining updates and we came back within 24 hours based on ham reports that there was power on the island and no serious flooding. I did get interviewed by Channel 6 TV Charlotte, NC, who were apparently desparate for storm related video and needed a dumb tourist walking the beach to interview. While arriving back we got caught in a long highway traffic jam that I thought was storm related, we eventually saw a vehicle upside down in a ditch and assumed then were going too fast on wet roads. Wrong! Turns out the driver had just murdered someone and was on a highspeed police chase on the highway we were on. The cops got their man. My son was most upset that we missed the police wrestling the criminal to the ground. Later that day we saw a crawl on CNN about two State Trooper that were shot in Chautauqua County, sad news. Glad to be back in WNY but got home to find a urgent message from family in England, stating that my 22 year old nephew Adam, who just graduated college in the Spring , was fighting for his life after an apparent random assault . See http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/manchester/5300812.stm for details, if interested. The irony is that the police investigating the crime are the same police force that my late father served in as a detective, Adam's Grandfather. Andy K3UK
