... The end result is that each distribution has its own personality, and some distributions are better suited to some tasks than others.I find that the category of linux newbie to be not accurate. I would put those distro's into the category of serious linux convert, but not newbie. The distro's he mentions as not having recent experience with: Lycoris, Lindows, and Xandros are the one's I would choose for what he calls newbies.
If I had the time and money I would test on three or four platforms:
Advanced desktop - Opteron or Athlon/64 system. Common desktop - 400 Mhz to 1 Ghz Celeron system.
Advanced notebook - Centrino system with wireless common notebook - 800 Mhz to 1 Ghz low power X86 Core (SIS for example)
I would do the install and then turn the system over to various family members, my wife (a nurse) and my son (a high school student, only interested in using the web for information, not gaming). I would also like to find a doctor in a long term family practice and see what they could make of it, but these folks are usually too busy to test technology!
