Hi Rudi,
HL7 is indeed THE standard used to communicate patient data in a hospital
(is implemented by all major vendors).
You can find a good introduction to HL7 on

www.IHE.net can also help you to understand hl7 messaging in the hospital
workflow.
There are a lot of (free) tools and api's available ... see
