Dear Dr Jyoti Ranjan
Most hospitals in India suffer from this problem...so your problem is not
unique.
There are over a few hundred players in hospital management/information
software in India. Unfortunately there are not many hospitals that have been
able to use information technology effectively to improve services. This is
because most of the vendors / developers of HMS in India dont just
understand healthcare automation.
( some of them will be contacting you directly to market thier products,
these guys use platforms like this discussion group to identify potential
clients..PLEASE BE ON YOUR GUARD !!)
Most of the available closed , proprietary solutions concentrate on the
financial and inventory management in hospitals and very little direct
patient related functionality such as Electronic health record or e
prescribing. Most of these Vendors will take you for an absolute ride !!!. (
This is from personal experince)
Unless you are very clear of your requirements( what functions you would
like to have automated). DONT approach a vendor. Get someone to do a
requirment analysis for you and then see how much of the functionality is
already exisiting in Care2x or other OPEN source solutions.
The advantage of using Care2x / OPEN source solutions is that the source
code/ design is available to you for you to see, modify and use based on
your needs, while in proprietary solutions the code or design is not
available to you. So you become a slave of the vendor , who will dictate
terms everytime you require some change or modification.
In otherwords if your vendor is trying to take you for a ride, you can
always dump them and get another person/ firm to continue with your
automation. Most hospitals in India are stuck with rudimentary solutions and
having spend large budgets, they simply cannot change the solution or
solution provider.
Also beware of the semi-open solutions /vendors, these guys use open OS (
operating systems like LINUX, SOLARIS ) , programme using JAVA /J2EE ( open
source programming) , use open databases like MySQL/ Postgress , recommend
browsers like Firefox which gives the client a feeling of working in an OPEN
source environment..but mind you NONE of the CODE is OPEN ... they try to
sell you their solution on the USP of being OPEN and therefore cost
effective, but please remember that its neither OPEN nor COST effective.
if you require any further advise, please do feel free to contact me. We
have a whole list of Blacklisted vendors / solutions which I would be happy
to share with you, so that you will not have to go through the same struggle
that we have been through.
