Wait just a minute: Something like this just happened to me, but was easy to fix.
I opened a spec file that had scenes, but didn't select a scene yet. Then I loaded a metric file. It complained about the number of nodes, although I knew all had 73730 nodes. I selected a scene and tried opening the metric. It worked. If you don't have anything loaded yet (coord/topo), opening something like a shape file may not work. Select a scene first.
