Yes, enter "caret_command -help-full" at a terminal window to get the

I know how to load a metric with gray palette and opacity=0.5 using 
scenes, and then save a resulting capture (jpg) of that scene.  But I 
don't know how to load a scene and save as VTK from command line.

You can certainly export surfaces to VTK format in caret_command, but I 
don't know how to do it with all the scene overlays/settings.
