It sounds like you did everything else right, key steps being changing 
the dimensions to 3D and clicking apply, but I wanted to clarify what 
you mean by "hoover."

When replacing, you should start at the part of the border you're 
unhappy with, and then drag (hold down with left mouse button while 
moving the mouse) along the desired trajectory, until you want the 
border to stop. Then shift-click to terminate.

Is that what you meant by "hoover"?
