Matt,

Can't say I've tried this, but might work:

On your native mesh flat map, select Layers: Borders: Create Cartesian Grid 
Flat Borders.

Layers: Borders: Project Borders

Save Data File: Borderproj files

Apply the deform_map to the borderproj file.
