mmm, the layers labels should be translated at the php level. You dont have
to add the {t} {t/} for these.
Are you sure gettext is installed correctly? If you are using Linux you can
run the check scripts testgettext.sh and testgettext.php in scripts/ .
And also check that the .po and .mo are generated correctly (do a grep in
them to see if the translated string are inside).
And dont forget to make a --clean to remove cache files

Thanks for your proposal. If I want to use the 2nd suggestion, I have to
modify the template for the "layers" plugin and modify because
{$element.layerLabel} would not return the translation for the layer label
?
{t}{$element.layerLabel}{/t} would work ?
As the "Layers" plugin is a core one, I would prefer to get this
functionnality in the cvs version if it's not yet instead of creating my
own
plugin.

you could also use the internationalisation system (.po files) to replace
the overlong label on the fly and only keep the minimal info in the
layers.ini see
