Hi Marvin, There definitely aren't any legal issues regarding the fact that there are dependencies on .NET. That's the whole point of the project--to provide a CAS client protocol implementation for users whose projects are dependent on the .NET runtime--in the same way that the Java client implementation is for users whose projects are dependent on Java VM.
Regarding the trademarks, I don't think MS has a trademark on .NET, specifically, but rather the logo. http://www.microsoft.com/about/legal/en/us/IntellectualProperty/Trademar ks/EN-US.aspx The trademark document that references .NET specifically reads like it was written 8 years ago--they've abandoned a lot of the terminology a long time ago (.NET connected, web-services connected, etc.). MS has stopped describing .NET as a web services platform a very long time ago and it reads like it pre-dates the time when .NET and Java services could interoprate. Apache's Lucene.NET and log4net, Spring.NET, Oracle's ODP.NET, Red Gate's .NET Reflector and .NET Developer Bundle, Paint.NET, DotNetNuke, Dotnet247.com, DotNetKicks.com, DotNetSlackers.com). I haven't heard of any cease and desist letters over it.
