Thanks for the link to the VT LDAP stuff.  It'd be tough to switch since
PersonDirectory also uses Spring LDAP.  Spring LDAP has served us pretty
well, except in this instance :-)

If I don't hear back from you about any work-arounds by tomorrow, I'll do
final 3.4.3 testing and push the issue to 3.4.4.  There's a number of good
fixes in 3.4.3 that I'd like to get out.
