Good question. Honestly, I haven't reached that point in any thinking I've done on the matter. I'm just trying to build a sound case for switching. The first thing that comes to mind about the mechanics of switchover is that we'd have to weigh the value of a gentle transition against the cost of maintaining two sets of functionally equivalent components. The LDAP components have needed little maintenance over the years, so the cost of maintaining both could be reasonable. As for the value of having both to ease transition, I can imagine trying to engage the community for feedback. Maybe a straight cutover isn't as painful as it would appear at first glance. It's also debatable whether the scope of change is consistent with a major (e.g. 5.0) or minor release (e.g. 4.1). In any case I'm open to suggestions and feedback.
